Do You Suffer From Prostate Cancer

Introduction: Prostate is a glandular organ present only in males. It surrounds the neck of bladder & the first part of urethra and contributes a secretion to the semen. The gland is conical in shape and measures 3 cm in vertical diameter and 4 cm in transverse diameter. It has got five lobes anterior, posterior, two laterals and a median lobe. Since the first part of the urethra pass by it any lesion in the prostate will produce difficulty in passing urine.

Diseases of the prostate gland:

1) Prostitutes:

This is the inflammation of the prostate gland due to bacterial contagion.

2) Benign enlargement of the prostate:

This is a non malignant tumour of the prostate seen after the age of 50.

3) Cancer of the prostate:

This is the 4th most common cause of death from malignant diseases in males.

Cancer of the prostate

Cancer of the prostate is directly linked with the male sex hormones (androgens). If the levels of sex hormone increase the growth rate of cancer also increases. It is found that after the removal of testes there is marked reduction in the size of tumour.

Site of tumour:-

Prostate cancer is seen mainly in the posterior lobe. Non cancerous enlargement is seen in other lobes.

Changes in the gland in cancer:-

The gland becomes severe with irregular surface with loss of normal lobulation. Histological prostate cancer is an adeno carcinoma (cancer of the epithelial cells in the gland)

Growth rate is very fast in prostate cancer .The tumour compresses the urethra and produce difficulty in urination.

Spread of tumour:

Metastasis in cancer of prostate is very early.

1) Local spread:

From the posterior lobe the cancer cells go to the lateral lobes and seminal vesicles. Tumour cells also move to the neck and base of the urinary bladder.

2) Lymphatic spread:

Through the lymph vessels cancer cells reach the internal and external iliac group of lymph nodes, from there cells move to retroperitoneal (Behind the peritoneum) and meditational lymph nodes (in the chest).

3) Spread through the blood:

Spread of cancer cells take place by the per-prostatic venous plexus and reaches the vertebral veins whilst coughing and sneezing and finally ends the vertebral bodies of the lumbar vertebrae.

Signs and indications of prostate cancer:

Signs and evidences depend upon the point of the cancer. The following indications may be seen.

1) No symptoms:

Tumour is small and only in the posterior lobe. This is diagnosed accidently.

2) Slight difficulty in urination:-

Here the tumour is enlarged and urethra is slightly compressed. Shortly there will be frequent urge for urination with severe urination.

3) If the tumour spread to all nearby areas including neck of bladder and urethra there will be painful urination with bleeding. Urine comes drop by drop.

4) Retention of urine:-

When the urethra is completely compressed there will be retention of urine. This can lead to hydronephrosis, renal failure ect. In this condition patient may get convulsions due to renal failure and eventually coma.

5) Signs of metastasis:-

Some patients come with the signs and evidences of metastasis.

a) Lumbo sacral pain due to spread of cancer cells to lumbar and sacral vertebrae.

b) Fracture of spine due to malignant growth in the spine.

c) Swelling, pain and fluid collection in the abdomen due to lesion in the abdomen.

d) Respiratory complaints due to cancer of mediastinal lymphnodes and lungs.

e) General weakness due to spread of cancer to different parts of the body.

f) Anaemia due to involvement of bone marrow and increased destruction of RBCs.

Clinical examination:

Includes per rectal examination to feel the prostate gland, palpation of abdomen to feel the swelling in kidneys and any tumours, patient is examined from head to foot to notice out any lesions.

1) Complete blood investigations:

RBC, WBC, Platlets, ESR, bleeding time ,clotting time ect.

2) Urine analysis:

Microscopic examination to find pus cells, occult blood, casts, Crystals ect.

3) Renal aim tests:

Blood urea level, serum creatinine level, electrolyte stage ect.

4) Serum acid phosphatase:

Increased in cancer of prostate

5) X-ray of the spine:

To find any tumour or fracture

6) Ultra sonography:

Gives idea about prostate, bladder, kidney ect.

7) C T scan:

More detailed information about organs and tumour.

8) MRI of the spine:

Gives detailed information about spine, disc and nearby soft tissues

9) Lymphangiography:

Gives idea about lymphatic spread of cancer

10) Biopsy to confirm cancer:-

Biopsy is taken from the tumour and is sending for histopathological examination under the microscope. This will detect the presence of cancer cells.

1) When there is retention of urine catheterisation is needed.
2) Dialysis when kidney failure.
3) When there is coma monitoring of all vital functions along with parentral nutriment and electolyte supply.
4) Specific treatment is prostatectomy (removal of prostate)

Partial prostatectomy:

Here only the touched lobe is removed.

Radical prostatectomy:

Total removal of prostate along with nearby lymphnodes

5, Hormone therapy:

Stilbestrol is given to reduce tumour growth. Since this treatment increases the chance for cardiovascular disease phosphorylated diethyle stilbesterol is used nowadays.

6) Chemotherapy:

Drugs like cyclophosphamide, cisoplatim ect are given.

7) Radiotherapy is also done for some cases.

8) Homoeopathy:

Homoeopathic drugs like carcinocin, conium, sabal, crotalus, thuja, iodum, selinium, staphysagria, and sulphur ect can be given according to symptoms. Constitutional homoeopathic medicine will give great assuagement and can increase the life span.

9) Yoga and meditation is also helpful.

What You Should Know About Your Prostate

The prostate gland is located in the body below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the urethra which is the conduit for urine from the bladder. The prostate provides fluid found in semen and can be the cause of problems in many men, especially as they age.

The prostate is about the size of a walnut in a young healthy man but it slowly gets larger as you get older. This expansion can cause problems with the urinary system. At the age of 70, almost 40% of men show a prostate growth which can be detected by physical exam.

There are several prostate problems which commonly affect men 50 years and older. The likelihood of having prostate problems increases the older you get. Some problems can be relatively easy to get rid of, while others such as prostate cancer can be deadly. The trouble is that practically all the symptoms associated with these different prostate problems are similar so you have no way of telling how serious your particular problem is, therefore it is vital that you see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms mentioned in this article.

Since the prostate wraps around the urethra, many of the symptoms of prostate disease have to do with urination. Some symptoms you might have may include frequent urination, blood in urine or semen, burning sensation while urinating, pain in the pelvis, upper thighs or lower back, pain during ejaculation, trouble stopping or starting urination and not being able to urinate at all.

One of the problems you may experience is called Prostatitis ad is an inflammation of the prostate gland. Acute bacterial prostatitis is an infection caused by bacteria. Prostatitis can cause fever, chills, lower back pain and also pain during urination. A repeated infection of the prostate gland is called chronic bacterial prostatitis. Nonbacterial prostatitis can cause prostate inflammation, but usually without any symptoms of infection. Difficulties may be urinary difficulty such as painful urination.

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BHP) is another problem that can result in ongoing tension on the urethra. This ‘squeezing’ may is attributed to problems in beginning urination, nightly increased urination as well as a proclivity to dribble afterwards.

Of all the problems associated with the prostate gland, prostate cancer is the most serious and will affect 1 in 6 males. In it’s early stages, prostate cancer may not have any symptoms but does have a high cure rate if caught early enough, thus proper checkups with your doctor are important.

The treatment course for prostate cancer differs depending on the location and size of the tumor as well as the patients health. If the tumor is small and has not spread out side the prostate, the surgery will probably be performed to remove the tumor. This may cure the cancer and may be combined with some other treatment as a safety measure.

In older men with slow growing prostate cancer, the best option might be to just watch the cancer without treating it. If it is causing no symptoms and slow growing then harsh treatments may do more harm to the patient than good.

Radiotherapy is a method used to treat prostate cancer that aims radiation at the tumor in the hopes of shrinking it or slowing the growth. While chemotherapy has not historically been shown to be much of a help in treating prostate cancer, hormone therapy may be used in some cases to shrink the tumor and slow growth.

Treatment for any prostate problem depends on your particular situation. If you have any of the symptoms mentioned above you should call your doctor right away so that you can have the best chance for a speedy recovery!

Hematology and Oncology – A Look into Pediatric Brain Cancer

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, there are more than four thousand children diagnosed with brain tumors each year in the United States. In many cases, these tumors start within the brain and are not the result of another cancer in the body spreading to the brain tissue. With a primary tumor in the brain it is rare to see it spread beyond the brain and spinal cord. Unfortunately, any tumor in the brain can be life threatening. Pediatric hematology and oncology provide treatment methods that help to eliminate the brain tumor before it grows too large, ultimately interrupting vital body functions such as breathing or the circulation of blood.

Pediatric Oncology – Facts about Brain Tumors
Brain tumors in children are very different from those that develop in adults, and a tumor in a child’s brain requires not only specific research but very different treatment methods. With many children, brain tumors are located in the control center of the brain governing thought, emotion, and movement. This can have a dramatic impact on development and could potentially create long term side-effects including physical, learning and emotional challenges.

? There are over 120 different types of brain tumors, which present a challenge for pediatric oncology specialists in forming an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan
? Brain tumors can become fatal if the location within the brain prevents surgical removal or other treatments/cures
? More than 70% of children diagnosed with a brain tumor are under the age of 15
? Approximately 11 children per day are diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor in the United States

Treating Brain Cancer through Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Treatment of brain cancer in children requires a number of specialists working in tandem with a division of pediatric hematology and oncology. Oncologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, pediatric surgeons, nursing staff specializing in pediatrics, rehabilitation staff, volunteers and more all work together to give children the greatest chance at success.

The chance of recovery during and after treatment depends greatly on the type of tumor, its overall spread, the age and general health of the child and the location of the tumor in the brain. Treatment can vary at different stages due to the fact that technology continues to evolve and improve. Those treatments that are available are tailored specifically to the needs of the individual patient.

Pediatric Hematology and Oncology – Treatment Methods
There are three types of treatment administered through pediatric hematology and oncology, applied either separately or in combination with one another.

Surgery – Surgery is intended to remove either all or a part of a tumor while minimizing the damage to surrounding tissue and nerves. In some cases only a small portion of the tumor or cancerous tissue is taken for biopsy. New technologies include brain mapping and intraoperative MRI as well as awake brain surgery allow surgeons to operate while reducing the potential for injuring vital areas of the brain.

Radiation – When surgery isn’t an option, another option through pediatric oncology is radiation. This is the use of high-energy X-rays that ultimately destroy tumor cells. Radiation is often used in tandem with or after chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy – This involves the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. This is referred to as a systemic treatment in pediatric oncology and hematology because the drug (taken through the muscle, through IV or orally) enters the bloodstream, travels through the body and can kill cancer cells.

Symptoms of brain tumors typically mimic those of many common childhood illnesses. Because the symptoms are so similar, it can be difficult for a pediatrician to diagnose cancer when a child is first seen. Parents are recommended to persist and request additional testing is symptoms of common illness persist and do not respond to normal treatments.

Prostate Cancer Treatment? – New Study Results – Delay Prostate Cancer Treatment! – Nurse's Report!

Whether or not to treat prostate cancer conventionally is one of the major medical dilemmas we have today. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. Approximately 222,000 cases will be diagnosed this year, however most prostate tumors tend to grow slowly. They never actually threaten lives. There is no sure way to tell which tumors will grow at a more rapid rate.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests can help find tumors many years before they cause any prostate cancer symptoms, however routine screening of men who are at average risk is currently not recommended, because there is no proof that it saves lives.

Prostate cancer treatments are particularly rugged, especially on older men. And many men end up after the treatment with sexual, bladder control or other prostate gland or prostate health problems. Many doctors instead recommend “watchful waiting” to monitor signs of prostate disease and treat it only if the signs or symptoms get worse. Smaller studies have given contrary views of the safety of this approach.

This new study looked at the natural course of the disease in the men who had chosen that option. Grace Lu-Yao of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey was the head of the study. It’s the first study involving so many older men. 50% of the men were over 75 and many of their tumors were found through the PSA tests.

As part of this study they used the U.S. government’s prostate cancer database. The researchers studied 9,017 men who were diagnosed over a period of ten years, from 1992-2002, with early-stage cancer who did not get prostate surgery, radiation or hormone therapy for at least six months. Most of the men never had any treatment whatsoever.

Ten years later only 3 percent to 7 percent of those with the low-grade or moderate-grade tumors (which are rated by how aggressive the cells appear to be) had died of prostate cancer, while 23 percent of those with high-grade tumors died. Overall, prostate cancer killed only 10 percent of the patients.

It’s thought that most of the patients are going to die from something else and because of this most of the older men with the early-stage tumors could delay any treatment. It’s not clear what should be done, if anything – whether it’s conventional prostate surgery, radiation and hormone therapy or alternative treatment. This may be true even if people are younger or have a more advanced prostate cancer. Most cases are diagnosed in men who are 68 or older, and most are in an early stage.

In any event this large study shows that a large number of men do well with no initial treatment and with no treatment long term. So this new study shows that for older men observation is a reasonable approach. Many patients do well for a long period of time with absolutely no treatment.

To sum up, older men with early-stage prostate cancer are not taking a big risk if they just keep a good eye on the progress instead of going ahead with treatment. It’s the largest study to look at this issue since the PSA blood tests to detect prostate tumors became so popular in the 1990s. The study may persuade some middle-of-the-road prostate doctors that we are over-treating prostate cancer and that PSA testing may be magnifying the problem. Finally patients have the opportunity to concentrate on adopting a healthy lifestyle and most importantly adopting a healthy diet.

All about Bladder Cancer

Bladder is one of the vital organs in the human body and is located in the abdomen, it looks and acts like a sac and is instrumental in collecting urine released from the kidneys before it is defecated. Cancer that rises from the epithelial lining is most commonly known as Bladder cancer. The cancer cells grow quickly in the bladder. Blood emission in urine is one of the symptoms in identifying this disease. Others symptoms might include extreme pain and presence of hematuria while urinating. Patients who are in advanced stage might also experience severe pain in and around the pelvic.

Some Causes For Cancer In The Bladder: One of the main reasons for a person getting infected with this cancer is smoking. As per a report, around 50% of men and around 1/3rd women who are affected by the bladder cancer are smokers. Hence, one of the best ways to prevent this cancer is to quit smoking at the earliest. Also for people whose daily works necessitates them to handle certain chemicals, also might increase the chances of getting this cancer. Jobs like leather workers, mechanics, bus drivers etc. have a high risk of getting this cancer. Usually, this cancer is detected at an initial stage; hence it is easier to treat.

Diagnosing the Cancer in the Bladder: It is done through cystoscopy, in which a bendable pipe which has a camera and other tools are inserted inside the bladder to do a biopsy. Treatment of this cancer varies and is dependent on how shallow the tumor is. Superficial tumors are those that have not yet reached the brawny portion and hence can be “shaved off”, this can be done by inserting the cystoscopy, an electrocautery device. Whenever cystoscopy is not a choice, Valrubicin, which is a chemotherapy medicine, is permeated into the bladder to fight the cancerous cells. Superficial tumors if not treated can penetrate into the brawny bladder walls. Usually if the tumor penetrates the walls of the bladder, it would require the patient to go through a more painful and comprehensive treatment in which it might require the partial or complete removal of the bladder. Experienced surgeons in some cases can actually create an alternate bladder or a neobladder, using a portion of intestinal tissue.

Ways to Prevent it: Drinking six glasses or 1.44 L of water will help prevent the cancer. Foods that have selenium like nuts, lean meat and carrots etc. are good to include in the meal as they help fight the cancerous cells.

What Are Some Skin Cancer Treatment Options?

Cancer treatments often vary depending on how far the disease has progressed and what type of cancer you have been diagnosed with. Your doctor will base the decision on your medical history and how good your physical health is in the present. The treatment for skin cancer has a healthy success rate and there are greater chances survival if you realize its symptoms early and start the treatment without any delay. The cancer is removed in layers and examined after each layer is removed.

As the doctor continues to remove thin layers during the procedure, he may continue to see more cancer cells. Once the doctor finds normal tissue, he will stop the removal. The doctor may also use a normal incision to remove skin cancer; however, when this method is used, there is a risk that some normal tissue will be excised along with the cancerous tissue.

Skin cancer cells can be frozen and removed using cryosurgery. A laser can be used to direct a light that kills skin cancer cells. Another way to treat skin cancer is by the use of radiation therapy. an x-ray is used to reduce the cancerous tumor and kill it. There is a topical treatment for skin cancer. Tiger Woods' Ex Wife Elin Nordegren: Coping with Extremely Stressful Situations

It is official, as of this week Tiger Woods and Elin are divorced. This has been quite an ordeal for Elin Woods (Nordegren); she went through a lot during this year.

Elin says she went through hell but she survived. Being through hell and back, she still looks great. We all know what stress can cause, for some it is weight gain and for some it is weight loss, whole others may become addicted to exercise. When a human body is exposed to stress, our adrenal glands release a certain hormone, called cortisol, which regulates reactions to stress.

“The heartbroken person feels so much emotional stress that the body is flooded with cortisol ” to the point of depletion,” explains Coral Springs mental-health therapist Deborah Gross.

“When heartbroken people talk of literally feeling pain in their chest, that’s actually a symptom of a chronic, long-lasting anxiety attack related to the breakup and fear of the future,” says Linda Losi, director of clinical services at Fair Oaks Pavilion at Delray Medical Center. At this point, people feel depressed and don’ t want to eat, sleep, or do anything else. According to press, Elin lost 10 pounds over the past two months due to stress. Luckily, Elin is emerging from this stage.

When we get stressed, it is important to recognize what it is doing to our body and address the issues as soon as possible through a balanced diet, exercise and maybe some meditation.

Stress can damage our immune system. The immune system is our body’s protective network designed to fend off invasion by harmful substances, including bacteria, viruses, and harmful chemicals, and to act as a surveillance system against the development of cancer. Our diet, nutrition and immunity are all related, so it is important to keep it balanced.
